Early postnatal exposure of rat pups to methylglyoxal induces oxidative stress, inflammation and dysmetabolism at adulthood

This work aimed to investigate the effects of early progeny exposure to methylglyoxal (MG), programming for metabolic dysfunction and diabetes-like complications later in life. At delivery (PN1), the animals were separated into two groups: control group (CO), treated with saline, and MG group, treated with MG (20 mg/kg of BW; i.p.) during the first 2 weeks of the lactation period. In vivo experiments and tissue collection were done at PN90. Early MG exposure decreased body weight, adipose tissue, liver and kidney weight at adulthood. On the other hand, MG group showed increased relative food intake, blood fructosamine, blood insulin and HOMA-IR, which is correlated with insulin resistance. Besides, MG-treated animals presented dyslipidaemia, increased oxidative stress and inflammation. Likewise, MG group showed steatosis and perivascular fibrosis in the liver, pancreatic islet hypertrophy, increased glomerular area and pericapsular fibrosis, but reduced capsular space. This study shows that early postnatal exposure to MG induces oxidative stress, inflammation and fibrosis markers in pancreas, liver and kidney, which are related to metabolic dysfunction features. Thus, nutritional disruptors during lactation period may be an important risk factor for metabolic alterations at adulthood.
Metabolic Profile and Body Composition in Twins Concordant and Discordant for Physical Exercise

The aim of this study was to evaluate the differences in the metabolic profile and body composition of monozygotic (MZ) twins concordant and discordant for the practice of physical exercise. The sample consisted of 92 MZ twins (72.5% female and 27.5% male, mean age 25.4 ± 5.69 years), registered with the Brazilian Registry of Twins, residing in Natal, Brazil. Data collection was carried out between the years 2016 and 2018. On day 1, subjects underwent a whole-body fitness evaluation, including measures of weight, height, body composition by Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry and the Cardiorespiratory Exercise Test. On day 2, 10 ml blood samples were collected (overnight fasting) to determine the lipid profile and fasting glucose. The sample was separated into three groups: Active Concordant twins (Concordant A, n = 44 subjects), Inactive Concordant twins (Concordant I, n = 22 subjects) and Discordant pairs for Physical Exercise (Discordant PE, n = 26 subjects). The results demonstrated a difference between the discordant twins for exercise and also between the active versus sedentary groups, indicating a causal effect of exercise on the fat percentage, maximum oxygen consumption (VO2max) and second ventilatory threshold variables. Between groups, a difference was also observed between the groups in ventilatory threshold, very low-density lipoprotein and triglycerides. We concluded that, regardless of genetics, the practice of physical exercise was sufficient to generate alterations in body composition and VO2max in MZ twins, but not in the lipid profile or fasting glucose.
Avian frugivory in Miconia (Melastomataceae): contrasting fruiting times promote habitat complementarity between savanna and palm swamp

Species of Miconia are considered keystone plant resources for frugivorous birds in Neotropical forests, but for other ecosystems little of their ecological role is known. The fruiting phenology and the composition of frugivores of four Miconia species in savanna and palm swamp from the Brazilian Neotropical savanna were studied in three sites from November 2005 to May 2011. The hypothesis tested was that plants from different habitats share their frugivores and consequently promote links between habitats. Through focal plant observations (30–50 h per species in each site), 668 visits by 47 species of birds were recorded and plants from different habitats shared most of the frugivores (49–97%). The fruiting of Miconia chamissois in the palm swamp during the period of fruit scarcity (dry season) was accompanied by an enhancement in the frugivore bird richness and abundance in this habitat, providing indirect evidence of resource tracking. Bird species which primarily dwell in savanna recorded consuming fruits in palm swamps during the resource-scarce season is taken as evidence of landscape supplementation. Miconia assemblage studied here seems to promote a link between two adjacent habitats in the Neotropical savanna from Central Brazil, a link which is likely to be common in this naturally patchy ecosystem.

The patterns of habitat use by the franciscana dolphins (Pontoporia blainvillei) along its distribution are poorly known. This study investigates the patterns of habitat use with respect to depth for 181 individuals of different age, size, gender and reproductive condition off Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil. The results reveal that franciscanas are very homogeneously distributed according to depth. Individuals from all lengths utilize nearly the entire range of depths of the surveyed area. Larger or older animals do not use deeper waters than younger animals, indicating that body size and age are not limiting factors for franciscanas that occupy deeper or offshore waters. Gestation seems to not cause a change in the distribution of females. Although the sex-ratio of the overall data did not vary from 1:1 in different depth intervals, a small-scale comparison between the northern and southern coast demonstrated the existence of some kind of sexual segregation. Franciscana by-catch in Rio Grande do Sul is not sustainable and it is agreed that management procedures are needed. Nevertheless, the available data on species distribution do not allow the designing of a protected area in order to minimize the by-catches of a particular sex/reproductive class.
Investigation on the Immobilisation of Carbon in OPC-BFS and OPC-PFA Systems

The reaction of CO2 gas with OPC, OPC-BFS and OPC-PFA composite cement systems were studied using XRD, SEM and TG to investigate the applicability of these materials to immobilise carbon arising from graphite waste. XRD results suggested that calcite formed in OPC system after the carbonation reaction, whereas calcite and vaterite were observed in OPCBFS and OPC-PFA systems. In OPC system, nearly half of Ca(OH)2 was consumed to form CaCO3. In OPC-BFS and OPC-PFA systems, the amount of CaCO3 formed, corresponded to the consumption of greater than 100% of Ca(OH)2 initially present, suggesting that other hydration products e.g. C-S-H were also consumed, either directly or indirectly during the carbonation process. The OPC-BFS system became more porous after carbonation. OPC-PFA system indicated a high efficiency on the conversion of Ca in the system into CaCO3.

Trying to estimate the long-term durability of cemented wasteforms is a difficult task as the cement matrix is a reactive medium and interactions can occur with the encapsulated waste as well as with the environment. There are few studies of samples that have been stored under controlled conditions for more than 10-15 years. Wasteforms are now being expected to last hundreds of years, much of that likely to be in some form of storage where sample integrity is important. There is also the concern that results from any long-term samples may only be indicative as both formulations and materials change with time.
This paper discusses changes in physical properties that occur in composite cements when some of the short-term accelerated procedures employed in construction testing are applied to encapsulating matrices. Changes after increased temperature of curing, wetting/drying and accelerated carbonation are discussed.
Many of the encapsulating formulations currently used are composite cements where large replacement levels of OPC with supplementary cementing materials (SCMs) such as PFA or BFS are made, primarily to reduce heat output. Accelerating the exposure conditions, either by increasing temperature or through wetting/drying has the effect of changing the hydration pattern of the composite cement by generating more hydration in the SCMs than would normally occur. The large amount of porosity that occurs because of limited hydration allows intrusion of gases and ready movement of water, so the samples subjected to accelerated testing do not appear as durable as expected if stored at ambient.

Encapsulation of low and intermediate level waste (LLW and ILW) into a monolithic waste form is a key method for preparing such wastes for storage and ultimate disposal. One of the most efficient ways of doing this is by cementation, successfully used for much of today's operational waste in the UK. Formulations are based on composite cements where high levels ofpulverised fuel ash or blast furnace slag replace ordinary Portland cement (OPC). These provide cementing systems with good fluidity, lowered heat of hydration and a matrix with lower porosity and permeability. Further the alkaline hydrated calcium silicate matrix ensures insolubility of many metal hydroxides and hydrated oxides. Dealing with historic or legacy wastes presents a challenge as for many, a suitable cementing formulation has yet to be devised. To achieve ultimate durability, likely interactions between the waste and the cementing matrix need to be well understood when choosing the cement system to be used. The alkaline OPC based matrix causes corrosion with metals such as Al and Mg and porous silicates and layered metal hydroxides used to selectively remove radionucleides react in the alkaline environment, potentially releasing the adsorbed species. Slurries of materials normally considered inert show interactions within the OPC composite systems, although these are not considered detrimental for durability. This paper describes the chemistry of some interactions that occur within OPC composite cements. It also details some results for alternative cementing systems that may provide a toolbox of cement types that may address many of the interaction issues. These include calcium sulphoaluminate cements, inorganic polymers or geopolymers, and activated slag systems.
